Client: Eco-Runner Team Delft
Location: Delft, The Netherlands
Year: 2020-2021
Material: Carbon pre-preg and Nomex honeycomb
Details: Holland Composites is one of the sponsors of the Eco-Runner Team Delft 2020-2021. We supplied them with the materials and provided working space, our knowledge and helping hands. With this, we offered them the opportunities to be able to build the new design for their hydrogen-powered car they conceived and designed themselves. The ultimate goal of the Ecorunner XI: participation in the Shell Eco Marathon, city car category.
The Eco-Runner Team Delft 2020-2021 consists of 23 students from Delft University of Technology. For a year, they are entirely dedicated to inventing, designing, making and presenting a hydrogen-powered city car. With this, they participate in the annual Shell Eco Marathon, in which student teams from all over the world compete for the title of ‘most efficient hydrogen-powered car’.
The Eco-Runner Team is divided into several divisions. In December and January, the Body Department built the carbon body of the Ecorunner XI in our production halls. We taught them the intricacies of working with composites and carbon pre-preg. After laminating the product in the mould, the curing process followed under vacuum in our Autoclave.
After several weeks of construction, the carbon body was ready and the team was able to unveil the design in mid-February. They did this entirely coronaproof via a Zoom livestream attended by over 300 viewers. Then, at the end of April, there was the big reveal of the Ecorunner XI: Watch the video on YouTube
Unfortunately, the Shell Eco Marathon 2021 will not take place because of the Covid-19 situation. But next summer, the Ecorunner XI will nevertheless compete with other hydrogen-powered cars from other student teams. Because creative as they are, the student teams have come up with some smaller competitions of their own. In this way, an interesting competition can still be held safely and can be followed online in style.
We were honoured and delighted to work with the engineers of the future to build the Ecorunner XI, the world’s greenest city car. As an innovative composites company working hard to make the construction industry more sustainable through bio-based composites, we wish the Eco-Runner Team the best of luck in the upcoming, self-organised challenges!
