Client: Tigra d.o.o. Zagreb
Architect: UPI-2M
Location: Zagreb, Croatia
Year: 2020
Surface: 32 x 6 x 6 m
Material: Glass fibre composite
Specifics: “Spomenik Domovini” = Monument for Homeland
This memorial complex in three parts was designed by Croatian architect Nenad Fabijanić: “The monument to the homeland consists of three solitary signs – the wall of pain, the altar – the canteen and the portal of the pavilion, which as a whole form the scene of the official, protocol ceremony of homage.” The portal is made of lightweight composite and has a free span of 30 metres.
The entire monument consists of a five-metre high triumphal arch (portal), carved stone boulders with eternal fire and a glass wall of light. Since December 2020, it has been the place where foreign delegations and statesmen leave flowers and wreaths for all the victims who fell for the homeland of Croatia. The grand portal of 32 x 6 x 6 metres is made of glass fibre composite, by Holland Composites.
The portal, which can also be seen as a modern city gate, is built from 6 horizontal parts and 3 vertical support pillars. The horizontal parts hang between the pillars and are attached to each other with metal anchor inserts. The free-span horizontal sections have visible seams, and LED lighting has been mounted between them to provide indirect illumination.
Thanks to the lightweight construction of glass fibre composite, it was possible to construct the slender-looking monument with this large free span. Solico carried out the engineering of this unique project for us.
All composite elements are made in our factory in Lelystad. This also goes for the so-called FAT-test, with which the test fitting and pre-installation simulation was carried out.
In July 2020, all components were transported to Zagreb on three ‘Convoi Exeptionell’ flatbed trailers, each 17.5 metres long. Using an assembly process prepared by us, the main contractor Tigra assembled the monument itself at the Zagreb site. The production and assembly of the monument took place under the special circumstances of the global Corona pandemic. Zagreb was also hit by two serious earthquakes in that already difficult year.
Finally, on Stjepan Radić Square in Zagreb, there is now a sleek, minimalist and imposing portal, as part of a grand and atmospheric monument that serves for many (commemorative) ceremonies.
