Spacebox was a brand name for a lightweight modular system of semi-permanent or permanent construction units, quickly realized and repositionable. And, thanks to an extensive colour palette, they provided a cheerful note in the often boring residential landscape.
The Spacebox building system was designed in 2003 by Mart de Jong of design agency De Vijf in The Hague. The spacebox has a good design. By connecting the prefabricated spaceboxes, large houses were also possible. The Spacebox became an icon and the historical impact of this product on our company cannot be underestimated.
The Spacebox was developed as a solution to make temporary student housing possible. At that time the waiting lists for renting a student room were very long and people were looking for alternative solutions.
We offered them. A completely independent unit, with a funky and appealing appearance. Holland Composites took care of the housing corporations by taking care of the entire process from A to Z; from permit application to final placement, connection to the public facilities and overall delivery. Many a serious university town has a location where Spaceboxes have been installed, many hundreds have been produced.
Today, we no longer carry the Spacebox in our range – despite many requests, the Spacebox is no longer available. Changed regulations and a changed economic landscape have made us decide to make the Spacebox a thing of the past.
