Commissioned by housing corporation DUWO, Braaksma & Roos Architectenbureau has redeveloped the monumental Sint Elisabeth Gasthuis in Leiden into student units and hospitality industry. The original layout of the old hospital was the starting point for the integration of the new functions. For the optimal furnishing of the student rooms they opted for the Smartcube concept of Holland Composites.

The Smartcube is a concept developed and produced by Holland Composites. It was the ideal solution for renovation projects in which the building function changed, for example from offices to residential units. The entire construction is made completely of composite and contains all the necessary basic sanitary facilities to transform a property into an official home.

In the case of the conversion of the Sint Elisabeth Gasthuis, the Smartcube also serves as a sleeping place: on top there is enough room for a double mattress. The bed is accessible by means of a sturdy, simply designed staircase and fitted with safety edges.

The Smartcube shows that composite is the perfect building material. Thanks to the light weight of the composite construction, it can easily be installed on existing, older floors without endangering the supporting structure. The block has a double-sided finish, which makes the surface very clean and smooth. The finish on both the inside and the outside is completely seamless, so that the risk of leakage, for example, is extremely minimal. It was also possible to choose from an extensive colour palette or images for the finish.
